So, it's been a while - but not as long as it was between my previous post and the last one before that. So cease with the smart remarks (that means no "two-plus-two-equals-four" business, ya' hear?!)
Well, I don't know how much time I have, but I'll post what I can. My parents came up for Thanksgiving - it was great. Janae and I are rarely afforded the luxury of visitors from out of State. They flew in Thursday afternoon from STL and they flew out of DTW at noon-ish today. It was really fun having them up here and getting to show off our place and take them around the area a bit. We even got to stop by a cider mill on our way to the airport this morning. It was the first chance we've really gotten to spend time with either set of parents since we got married. We've seen my parents and her parents once since the wedding, but it was during a quick weekend trip down to Springfield for Janae's brother's wedding so there wasn't much time for chit-chat. Anyway, long story short - it was a great, relaxing, food (and tummy) filled weekend.
To top it off - I'm officially announcing that we have a new member of our family. We've wanted to expand for a little bit now, and we can finally let people know of our addition....
...we got a new cat tonight. I tried to make you think it was a baby, but I know I probably wasn't fooling anyone. I'm a horrible liar. So, yeah - we got a little 4 month old kitten. We went into Petsmart for a couple of fireplace stockings (for the felines) - and we left with the fireplace stockings... and an orange kitty. We've been trying to think up names all night. My top suggestion was 'The Doctor' and Janae's was 'Butters'. Since Janae didn't want to name a cat 'The Doctor', I'll reserve my sci-fi tribute for our next pet - or, even better, our first son. When Janae protests, I'll be sure to oft mention the sacrifice I made in letting her get the orange kitty she just had to have. Of course, I adore the little 'Butters' just as much as Janae does - and she knows it. So, among other reasons... my argument for a Gallifreyan son will likely fail.
Well, my time's up. Gotta go spend some time with the little booger. See you on the flip-side.

Apparently almost 6 months - that's too long. I don't think I can apologize enough. I have plenty to update on, but don't have much time - so I'll do my best to type like a caffeinated secretary. Here goes...
As of August, I have been enrolled at Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Southfield, Michigan. I'm hoping to learn a ton for a future career in radio (I'd love to be a station voice or narrate documentaries on TV). School is going quite well. Had I as much enthusiasm for school when I was at SMS as I do now, I would have done considerably better. Of course this is a specialized program that I'm much more interested in than anything involving a Gen-Ed core. I'm done with the first 8-week quarter and well into the second. I'm very proud to report a cumulative 4.0 for first quarter (especially since my best attempt at SMS resulted in a 0.5) where I missed perfect attendance by one ridiculous tardy (long story). We'll see how this quarter goes. I have all new classes with new instructors, save one teacher from last quarter. The program is pretty intensive to begin with, as there is a lot of material to cover in the 8 months we're there - and this coursework is definitely more challenging than the first (understandably so). I am really looking forward to the end of this quarter, because then students must decide between a radio or video concentration (thankfully no 'camps' are involved). Because of this, from third quarter on, each group will be considerably smaller. I am planning to go radio, and my hope is that the idiots who make class difficult by asking stupid questions (often times more than once!) and being disruptive/distracting either go video or go home so that I don't have to deal with them any more! However, one can only hope - and time can only tell.
One of the biggest changes in my life since the last post is that I have joined the ranks of married folk. As of 07/07/07, Janae Swartzlander became Janae Robertson and I became an extremely happy fellow. We were very privileged to honeymoon in the UK. After a week in London, we took a train up to Edinburgh and spent a week there. We have an official crap-ton of pictures that I would love to put online somewhere so I can just put a link up for folks to check out. The best we've done so far is each of us have a few honeymoon pictures on our respective myspace pages. Other than Janae getting very sick our last day there, it was an amazing trip.
After the wonderful wedding and unbelievable honeymoon, we immediately relocated to the Detroit area so Janae could start her residency to become a certified Orthotist. Unless one of us has already explained it to you, you're probably saying, "ortho-what?" It's similar to a Prosthetist (who makes prosthetics) - but instead of making artificial limbs and such to replace what is missing, orthotics assist in the movement and development of what is already there. So, she makes cranial helmets to help properly shape growing children's heads, braces to correct scoliosis, devices to assist in walking, etc. Anyway, next August, she'll be a board-eligible orthotist and will receive her certification after taking the Boards exam in the Spring of '09. Barring how things go with that, and for my future career, we might be in the Detroit area for quite a while. We'll see how things go. It's beautiful up here, and we don't talk to anyone outside of my class and her work - so we'd love a visit from any of you Springfieldians!
Well, I need to get ready for school so I must end this post. I will give my best effort to post again in a much more reasonable amount of time than my last one :) Until then...

Best Buy-ers Remorse

So yeah... I got an iPod today. I have wanted one for quite a while and, with the upcoming travel madness quickly approaching, decided to buy one. I went to Best Buy on my lunch break, and after using a lifeline (I phoned a friend: my co-worker Denton, who is an iPod owner), I took his advice and went ahead with the purchase of an 80G version in black. I went directly home and started cramming my iTunes audio library (music, podcasts, comedy, etc) onto my new toy. I'm both really excited to have something I've wanted for such a long time, and a little guilty for spending that much money. I think I'm ultimately more pleased than not, so I'll look forward to being able to have a bunch of my music traveling with me without the hassle of a bulky CD case.
Guess I'll be eating ramen for a while ;)

I turned on iTunes right before starting this post, and I was a bit startled at the irony of the song that first came up. Why? Because the title should tell you why... No, I am not talking about Ted Nugent. I am, in fact, referring to myself. That's right, I will be a Detroit resident within a matter of months. To be more exact, I will be a West Bloomfield resident (they don't consider themselves part of Detroit).
For those who aren't aware, Janae is in the process of completing her certificate that will allow her to become an orthotics practitioner. She has been attending a special school for that since August of 2006, and will be graduating on May 07. After completing a year of school, all graduates of the program are required to take up a year-long residency at a certified orthotics office. Once that year is complete, an extensive examination (called the Boards) is given and, upon completion, a certificate is awarded that will allow the recipient to practice.
Janae interviewed at certified offices in Kansas City, Tulsa, and Detroit (Waterford) with the Michigan site working out best. After she completes her residence, passes her Boards, and gets employed at an office (quite possibly the one in Waterford), Janae plans to attend classes via distance learning (online courses) and begin acquiring the prosthetics certificate portion of the O&P program - which will precede a year of residency at a certified prosthetics office and another Boards examination. This will mean a possible 3 years away from family and friends. Are we nervous as all get out? Yes. Are we looking forward to it? Absolutely.
What will I be doing during this time, you ask? Okay, maybe you don't ask, but I'm gonna tell you anyway. Janae's residency will be paid, and should be enough to supply us with income sufficient for allowing me to become a full-time student. That's right, I plan on going back to school (I barely started college, let alone finished it). I have been praying, and I feel confident God is calling me to at least try my hand in the field of radio broadcasting. Well, no, my hand isn't going to do much for radio anything, since it's not the part of my body that allows me to talk - but you know what I mean. Well, it so happens that Detroit contains what appears to be a great school for that specific field - and the program is only 8 months long, so I would be able to get my foot in the door of the broadcasting world by the time Janae's done with her residency. This looks to be a great plan and I will continue praying for the Lord's guidence as details continue to fall into place, making my path seem more clear.
I will be continuing work at Springfield Music until June 8th, which will give Janae and I three weeks to take care of any back-and-forth trips that may need to take place before our wedding in early July. May 6-14 will be a crazy busy time, as will be practically the entire month of June. As we are nearing our date of marriage, I am so thankful we took care of as much early on as we did - it will surely make last minute details relatively painless and help bring our stress levels to a minimum.
I want to end this post with a gigantic THANK YOU to all of our friends and family. Your love, support, prayers, and friendship have meant more to us than you can possibly know. You all will make this move extremely difficult for us to make, but we are confident that God will grant us fellowship once we are in Michigan and, if it is His Will, to allow us to come back to Springfield and settle here - we love this place! I sincerely hope that among all the crazy transitions coming quickly, Janae and I can spend plenty of quality time with our friends and family before having to relocate for a bit.

Not quite as wonderful as snow globes.

Well, I lied. What I have in store for you is slightly more wonderful than snow globes.
Last week I was looking at some video clips of some awesome musicians. There was a particular one that caught my eyes (and ears). I had heard of the artist, but never actually listened to any of his music. His name is Michael Manring and, let me tell you - I have been so missing out. I need to get an album or three from this guy pronto. He primarily plays fretless basses and is known for using multiple tunings within the same song. What I mean by that is, he has basses that let him change tunings on the fly. In the video I've posted below, he is using a Zon (his preferred brand) model that he has 'pimped out' with a Hipshot Bass X-Tender tuning key on each string, as well as a detune-able bridge. If you aren't mesmerized by his incredible playing, try and count how many times he changes tuning while he's playing. I counted 60. Yeah, he's pretty dang awesome. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do:

And here he covers the song Teen Town by Weather Report. Note: He doesn't just play Jaco's amazing bass lines. He plays all the other parts first (he loops each layer before adding another part) and then plays Jaco's amazing bass lines. If you listen closely, you can catch a fun little Hendrix tribute amidst his insane overdriven solo part. A very impressive performance.

4) Another performance on David Letterman's show, Rodrigo Y Gabriela are an amazing pair. In case you end up thinking, "Hey, the audio and video aren't synced up very well, the picture keeps skipping frames. What kinda crappy video did he post?!", there are no problems with the video - they're just playing faster than the camera can keep up.
3) One of the greatest guitar icons ever, Christopher Guest's lovable lead guitarist of Spinal Tap, Nigel Tufnel. In case you've been living under a rock your entire life, yes - Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer actually played their parts for This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind. They are all phenomenal musicians and songwriters.
2) Ah, Dragonforce. They've been labeled everything from "Britain's newest guitar gods" to "Nintendo metal". One thing these guys haven't been called is "slow". Watch the inset on the video... To paraphrase Ned Needlander, "There are no camera tricks, they are that fast." And for those who were living under that rock I mentioned above, Ned Needlander was Martin Short's character in "Three Amigos".
1) This guy's name is Andy McKee. He can make one guitar sound like an entire band. Granted, said band doesn't have a kazoo in it, but this should still blow your mind anyway (my favorite part is toward the end, when he's doing all the harmonics):

Okay, before anyone starts - I am well aware of my inactivity on the ol' Blogspot. I will be the first to admit that I have been slacking for the better part of two months. Please refer to this post's title and leave it at that :)
Now, on to the good stuff. Well, I have nothing to back up how 'good' it is, but I am finally sitting down to write on here after a two month absence so that should be 'good' enough. If it's not, well too bad. The time since my last post has been busy, to say the least. Not just for me, but for everyone around me too. Examples being: new lives brought into the world, Springfield's proverbial statue head getting pooped on by nature's ice-pigeons, people recovering from said catastrophe, me getting to spend time with my favorite person (her name rhymes with Kanae Twartzlander), getting to know new friends, catching up with old ones, and listening to some great music. Sheesh - lots of stuff going on.
Well, as stated in comment form on one of Todd's latest posts - I'm going to steal another idea of his (the first being the "What I'm Listening To", which I'd like to think I improved upon by adding a second song at the end of each post :) Top 5. Not as many as David Letterman's Top Ten List, but far superior. I'll try it and see how it goes.
Top 5 Favorite clothing fabrics:
1. cotton
2. polyester
3. wool
4. lycra (spandex)
5. 8-grit sandpaper
That wasn't so bad. I think I can get the hang of it. I have several things I need to be doing instead of typing, so I should probably get to as many of those as I can before bedtime. After-whiles crocodiles...
